Ancient , Mediaeval and Modern Philosophy. Approximately around XVI th century and the Renaissance of the Greek and Roman styles of living and thinking, the discovery of different continents and the beginning of science and the scientific methods with the concomitant conquests of nature and rapidly developing discoveries of almost all branches of different sciences there developed gradually what today we call Modern Philosophy. It is important to remember that the fundamental questions are still same but the approach to them and the different solutions are new. In Modern Philosophy under the impact mentioned above plus the gradual loss of confidence in the powers of the human mind, the central issue became the question of the nature , scope, limits and limitation of human knowledge. The prevailing attitude of doubt in the old previous philosophical solutions and beliefs gradually dominated the modern times. The name of the philosopher who usually is mentioned as the father of Modern Philosophy is the French philosopher Rene Descartes. It was Descartes who openly and honestly became aware of his inner lack of certainty and pervasive doubt. Descartes wanted to develop a philosophy of reality with indubitable foundation , absolutely certain on which to build the total vision of reality. This is why he is universally known by his famous statement: “ Cogito Ergo Sum,” I think therefore I am.
